Horticulture gardens provide access to fresh, locally-grown produce, promoting healthy eating habits and food security. They also serve as educational hubs, offering opportunities for gardening skills, environmental awareness, and sustainable practices.
Incorporating polytunnels into our horticultural garden can extend the growing season, allowing for year-round food production. These structures create a controlled environment that protects plants from harsh weather conditions, such as frost, excessive heat, or heavy rains.
By moderating temperature and humidity, polytunnels enable the cultivation of a wider variety of crops throughout the year, including those that are not native to the region. This means that even in winter, gardeners can produce leafy greens, root vegetables, herbs, and other seasonal crops.
At Comraich we have designed the site with the horticulture garden and composting extension in mind, it sits centre to our whole operation, surrounded by the animal enclosures.
It's produce will be be donated to local foodbanks as soon as it is harvested, providing fresh, healthy options for underprivileged adults and children. Any waste produce will be fed to the animals, or added to our homemade compost to be put back into the garden in the following year.
The garden will also be a vital tool in our education as it will require daily management. We aim to provide training and work experience opportunities for secondary school children, and local unemployed adults.
We will offer simple horticulture classes for underprivileged families, teaching them everything they need to know to grow their own food at home, from choosing the right soil, to harvesting a full grown plant.
Regardless of whether families have access to a garden or reside in a high-rise flat, our Home Harvest Kits are carefully customised to cater to the needs and circumstances of each individual, ensuring that they can benefit from our program, while remaining Landlord Friendly.
